You’re ready to hit the road, turn the key, and… silence. A dead car battery can be a frustrating roadblock, that’s why knowing how to jump starting your car is a skill every driver should have in their toolkit. So, here we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of jump starting your car safely and efficiently.
What You’ll Need:
- Jumper Cables – Choose high-quality, heavy-duty cables with sufficient length to comfortably connect both vehicles.
- Another Running Vehicle – You’ll need a second vehicle with a charged battery to jump start your car.
- Safety Gear – Consider wearing safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from accidental sparks.
Step 1 – Assess the Situation
Before attempting to jump start your car, take a moment to double check the battery is actually flat.
Check for signs of a dead battery, such as dim lights, a clicking sound when you turn the key, or complete silence. Then, identify the battery terminals. Locate the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both your car’s battery and the assisting vehicle’s battery.
Step 2 – Position the Vehicles
Park the assisting vehicle close enough to the dead vehicle so that the jumper cables can comfortably reach both batteries. Turn off the ignition in both vehicles and engage the parking brakes to ensure stability.
Step 3 – Connect the Jumper Cables
Connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.
Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the assisting vehicle’s battery.
Next, connect the negative cables:
Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the assisting vehicle’s battery.
IMPORTANT: Instead of connecting the other black clamp directly to the dead battery’s negative terminal, attach it to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or frame of the dead vehicle. This minimises the risk of sparks near the battery.
Step 4 – Start the Assisting Vehicle
Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. This allows the dead battery to receive some charge.
Then, try starting your car. If it doesn’t start immediately, wait a couple of minutes and try again.
Step 5 – Disconnect the Jumper Cables
In the reverse order of how you connected them, carefully disconnect the jumper cables.
- Start with the black clamp attached to the unpainted metal surface of the dead vehicle.
- Remove the other black clamp from the negative (-) terminal of the assisting vehicle’s battery.
- Remove the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the assisting vehicle’s battery.
- Finally, remove the red clamp from the positive (+) terminal of the previously dead battery.
Once your car has successfully started, drive it for at least 15-20 minutes to allow the alternator to recharge the battery.
Tips and Precautions
- Check Your Vehicle Manual – Always refer to your vehicle’s manual for specific instructions and precautions regarding jump starting.
- Avoid Sparks – Keep the jumper cables away from moving parts, and never let the clamps touch each other.
