How to Prepare

Before any road trip, you should do a thorough check of the condition of your car, especially if you are going to remote or off-road areas.

Here is your road-trip car-care checklist:

Fluids

  • Oil
  • Radiator fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Transmission fluid

Tyres

  • Air pressure – 1,500 kilometres
  • Rotation – 8,000 to 13,000 kilometres

General maintenance

If your car is nearly due for a service, it’s best to book in and have the service completed before embarking on your road trip. This will guarantee that your brake pads are in good condition, your air filters are clean, all light bulbs are working, and your belts and hoses are in good shape. A service before leaving will help to ensure your car is in the best shape for the journey with no nasty surprises. It also gives you an opportunity to ask your mechanic for tips on what to look out for on the road.

When you return, go through the checklist again to make sure that your fluids are OK and there was no damage on your trip.
