Many issues that require car maintenance are obvious just by cracking the hood or checking the tires. However, an often-overlooked aspect of car maintenance is the suspension, and it can quickly become an unexpected cost if not monitored. Here are some common signs that it is time for a suspension service.
Pulling and Drifting
We’ve all had the experience of driving down a long straight road but having to continuously adjust the wheel. Over time, the car starts to drift to one side. There could be a number of reasons for this (a broken steering wheel or you might require a tyre service), but one of the most common reasons is that your suspension needs a service.
Oily Shocks
Your shocks, or struts, are located underneath your car and are a key part of your suspension. If they’re visibly oily or greasy, this could be a sign that they’re leaking. Additionally, your car might leave a trail of fluid underneath it. Either or both of these things could mean you are due for a service.
Uneven Tyre Treads
Sometimes, it can feel like you’re having to buy new tyres every other month. It’s important to replace your tyres if they’re wearing or have bald patches on them. If you feel like your tyres aren’t lasting nearly as long as they should, that might be because your car suspension isn’t working properly. You need the weight of your car to be distributed evenly. If that’s not happening, it’s time for a service.
Dipping When Stopping
Another sign that your suspension needs servicing is the front of the car dipping or sinking forward lower than usual when you hit your brakes, especially when coming to a quick stop. If this is happening to you, have your suspension checked.
Rough Drives
Often, the most noticeable sign that your car suspension needs a service is when your drive is rougher than usual. You will always feel some of the bumps in the road, but if your car doesn’t stop bouncing after going over a pothole or a mound, you’ll want to get that suspension serviced promptly.
